Summer School Party

Summer school has started. I have a class of three five year old boys. Here are some projects I've been doing with my students...

We made Teepees...

Star Wars gets a mention, as does Kung Fu Panda and Superman but Batman is the favourite. We made batman masks.

I have to ration Batman colouring pages as they would like to colour in every single black and white Batman there is in the world.

Lopburi Party

These are people from Lopburi at an arts and crafts fair.

Women hand painting intricate designs on to teacups.

A man weaving on a loom.

Lopburi is famous for the many monkeys which reside in its town.

However, this is a picture I took there of the lesser famous elephant.

Crunch Party

On Tue, Mar 10, 2009 at 1:17 AM :
Hi Rupa,

A world cinema column would be fantastic!

As for illustrations, I'm expecting an article by The Indelicates about the recession, so anything themed along those lines would be good, maybe something combining it with the broader map theme of the site?

Hi Paul,

Here's what I came up with.

/>
The map's theme plays on being lost in a dark wood and the recession is illustrated by the bare money trees layered with the burnt five pound note (oh dear!)

Hope this is ok,

best wishes,
Rupa

Cake in the clouds Party

My 'Modern Physics / Eye Glass' featured here. Someone buy it. Please. Tell you what, if you're reading this and you want it, it's yours. I'll trade it for cake. Or gum.

After Party

Before.

And After. (Theoretically thirty-seven years earlier...)

More ingredients for my porfolio cookbook here.

Kids Party

Illustrations for a children's book.

So sickly sweet I can hardly bear to put pencil to paper.

Cloudy Party

Here's an image I have on the Victoria and Albert Museum's online gallery.

I'm a little sleepy today after partying to promote our play. Up at five and worked on The V Word zine. To be honest, I couldn't resist a little cat nap in the multimedia room at TCDC, but that's between you, me and the closed circuit television surveillance system.

Prosthetic Party

I have been working on the computer to build up a portfolio and my hand is turning into a claw due to using the mouse for 15 hours a day.

Perhaps I should put that bid in for the robotic arm after all. And fashion some kind of hook in the interim...

Poster Party

Here's the flyer I designed for the Bangkok Production of The Vagina Monologues for V Day. Created in a passionate love/hate relationship with adobe illustrator.

Telephone Party

I am sketching on a piece of canvas for a new painting. in the bottom left of the picture there should be a telephone receiver. So I'm using my telephone reciver as a model. The one in the painting should look like it belongs in an 1980s New York kitsch 'boudoir' (Whatever the hell that is.) But it my phone looks as though it was taken from an abandoned German office block in the mid 90s. An annoying beeping noise started after I left it off the hook for a while. To stop it, I have rested a pot of PVA glue on the cradle.

Rhukha Mail Party

Today I launched my new online shop Rhukha Mail

Rhukha Mail is a concept stationery store, based on mail art The store will deliver notes, stationery and collage illustration on 7" x 4.5" envelopes to your door.

There's a launch promotion too: All orders receive a gift collage. Until end of February.

Postal Service Party

I've started a mail-art project with my friends. Or at least I'm forcing them to be a part of it by sending unsolicited art through the postal service and telling them that they are now a part of the project and cannot escape.

You can join in the Rhukha Mail Art Project
too if you send me your address in an email.

Cut and Paste Party

I'm making a behind-the-scenes zine for the Bangkok Production of The Vagina Monologues. However, since putting my computer in the shop to get it 'fixed' it's crashed every time I open a picture file. Oh dear, but it's difficult not to feel endeared to those pale techies who so rarely see the light of day at windowless Pantip. Maybe I'll have to hand-write the zines, or perhaps commission them for a robotic arm...

Patravadi Party

The Patravadi Theatre is a beautiful space for performing arts in Bangkok. Today I was making costumes there. The premise of the play I was working on based on the lack of abstinence and promiscuity amongst some Buddhist monks in contemporary Thai society.

In the play, some nuns are given the role of seducing the monks. For this project I made two petticoats out of muslin and a red chiffon enmeshed with natural twine. The nuns uniforms are white. The redness of the petticoats, which were just visible, were to represent the desire beneath the surface.

Venus Party

Last month I saw Venus Party, a piece of contemporary physical theatre performed at the Bangkok Theatre Festival in December '08. It broaches issues about women in modern society, including eating disorders, body image, the objectification of women, women in the workplace, treating the body as a commodity and competitive consumerism. One scene depicts a man and a woman entering into the convention of marriage. The expressing to'tie the knot' is represented literally by a rope tying their necks together. The rope representing the institution of marriage and the and bondage it locks its subscribers into.

The play ended with a message of hope; a dream-like sequence where the cast were dimly illuminated and it was possible to see the specks of dust swirling in the air. The characters chased these dust particles in slow-motion, marvelling at their beauty and treating the valueless as precious. It served as a reminder that we each survive in our own paradigm and the truth in life and beauty lies both within ourselves and in the world we live should we seek to find it.

Christmas Present Party

My gift for Jane is still here. I've seen her twice since Christmas but it's still sitting in my apartment, I'm forgetful.
